The Outstanding Kayaking Events

Olympic events

For people new to watersports, the difference between a canoe and kayak in Olympic events can be quite confusing. Canoes and kayaks are both normally lightweight boats propelled and controlled by people using paddles.

But each boat is unique in its own way. Both can be used for recreation as well as watersports, fishing, and traveling. There are a few key differences to look out for when distinguishing one from the other.

Canoes and kayaks are classified by letters and numbers. The boat classifications generally stick to a common letter and number system. For example, a typical canoe with one paddler would be defined as the C1 solo. A canoe with two paddlers would be defined as the C2 tandem.

The typical canoes have an open deck meaning the top of the boat. And consequently, the inside of the boat is open to the elements. Some canoes used in competitions or harsher water conditions can have a closed cockpit.

During Olympic games, a typical canoe could be classified as OC1 whereas the closed cockpit canoe could be classified as C1. A solo kayak would be signified by K1 whereas a tandem kayak would be K2 and K4 would signify a 4-person crew.

Olympic kayaks normally carry fewer people and they usually travel faster than canoes. Therefore, they are favored for competitive and challenging water conditions. Besides Olympic kayaking eventsthere are Olympic kayaking slalom and Olympic whitewater kayaking.

Slalom whitewater events

Whitewater kayaking competition

The next one is slalom whitewater events. You can distinguish the canoeing and kayaking events by looking at the inside of the boat.

When sitting, the canoe paddler sits on a seat and places their knees against the top edge and rim of the boat. When kneeling, the canoe paddler positions themselves closer to the front of the seating and wedges their knees against the sides of the boat for stability.

Paddlers in kayaks usually sit lower to the hull bottom of the boat in a cockpit. And their legs are stretched forward inside the kayak with their knees resting on supportive thigh braces.

On top of that, the paddler of the canoe typically uses a single blade pedal. Kayak paddlers usually use double-bladed paddles because kayak paddlers are generally seated lower than canoe paddlers.

In a canoe, a single paddle does not provide efficient propelling some advantages to using a double-bladed paddle. And of course, a single blade paddle is energy conservation and minimizing zigzagging in the water.

Flatwater and sprint water events

About the flatwater and sprint water events, the kayakers will sit inside of the boat. And on the other hand, the canoeists in these events tend to kneel on one knee. The other foot will be placed in front to give you more support.

Typical canoes normally have an open deck whereas kayaks normally have a closed deck. The difference in the two decks is essentially obvious. Open deck exposes the top and inside of the boat to the world. Meanwhile, the closed decks cover the top and the inside of the boat.

Accordingly, a canoe with an open deck gives the paddlers the opportunity to move freely. You can realize this plus point when watching the canoe slalom or the canoe sprint. And well, a kayak with a closed deck surrounds the paddlers and provides protection as well as the secure seating for rougher water like sea and whitewater.
